Black-capped Chickadee

Black-capped Chickadee 8″ x 8″                                    Available on Etsy

Here come the birds. I am very lucky to live in a place where birds stay year-round. Lots of ideas and inspiration for little bird paintings to come.

Northern Flicker

Northern Flicker 8″ x 8″                                                  Available on Etsy.

When I look at the paintings I’ve completed over the past year or so, I notice a trend. I seem to be going back to the subject matter that I loved throughout my childhood and teens. Horses, pets, birds and wildlife. It hasn’t been intentional. They are fun, and one leads to the next until I have a series of animals.

It’s fun to compare the new to the old. This is a sketch from many years ago.

Boy in the Meadow

Boy in the Meadow 8″ x 8″

The boy in this meadow is my son. This is how the meadow looks in the spring with lupines and buttercups blooming. It’s full of birds, insects and frogs, which makes it one of his favourite places.

I had some trouble with this painting. It is an overcast day and the lighting is very flat. I am used to adding dimension with highlights and shadows, but in this picture they are very subtle. I’m not sure I succeeded with this painting – something to keep working on I guess.

Grandma’s House

Grandma's House 8"x8"

Grandma’s House 8″ x 8″

This is a little painting of my Grandma’s house, which I have painted before. My style has changed quite a bit since the first one. I’m not sure who took this photo or how it got into my files, but thanks to the family member who shared it.

This painting is available as a print on Etsy.

Another trip to Mayerthorpe means another painting of the elevator. From a new angle. With different lighting.

For sale on Etsy.

Pearl & Rocky 6″ x 4″

These two little 6″ x 4″ paintings will be my last chickens for a while. Time to move on to something else I think.

The set is for sale on Etsy.

Blanche

Blanche 8" x 8"

Blanche 8″ x 8″

A chicken named Blanche. Available on Etsy.

Ginger

Ginger 8" x 8"

Ginger 8″ x 8″

If I name a chicken after you (accidentally or on purpose), please don’t be offended. It doesn’t mean that you look or act or remind me of a chicken. Actually I find most of them to be quite beautiful. On the other hand, if you would like one of these chickens to have your name, please let me know!

This one’s for sale on Etsy.

Chickens

Chickens

Betty & Veronica 8″ x 8″

Chickens. Not a very exciting name for a painting of chickens. This naming problem isn’t going to go away, as I have a few more chicken paintings planned. I could either number them (chicken 1, chicken 2, chicken 3), which would be really boring. Or I could just give them names, which is much more fun and adds a little personality. So, let me introduce you to Betty and Veronica.

This one is for sale on Etsy.

A horse, a chicken and a dog

Finishing off the year with these three, all for sale on Etsy.

I have really enjoyed painting animals in 2016. The chickens seem to be very popular and are really fun to paint. 2017 is the year of the Rooster, so of course I will have to include a few in my art this year.

Happy New Year!
