Storm Over Mayerthorpe

Storm Over Mayerthorpe 14″x 18″

This is the same storm that I painted in here, just a little further down the road. Is anyone else getting “Stranger Things” vibes from this one?

Somewhere in Alberta
18″ x 24″

I am not brave enough to post my work in progress. If the final painting is not a success, I like to have the option of forgetting it ever existed. Now that the painting is finished, I feel okay sharing some of my steps.

3″ x 3″ paintings

Once again I am working on these little 3 inch paintings, perfect for gift giving. I really enjoy them because they are quick and give me a break from my larger “serious” paintings. They remind me that painting should be fun. They also work as little studies for large paintings later on. I’ll be focusing on these until Christmas.

Lines 24″ x 18″

The sky of this painting reminds me of a jigsaw puzzle. If I made a cut along each power line, can you guess how many pieces would make up the sky? I counted 74. That’s right – 74! (No wonder this painting took me so long).

What’s My Style?

Winter Tracks 8" x 10"

Winter Tracks 8″ x 10″

Recently, someone who has never seen my work asked me what style my paintings are. I should know how to answer that, but I was at a loss. I don’t know the answer. I know what I paint and why I paint it, but I don’t know what my style is called. It occurred to me that I should have a short prepared statement that I can rattle off when needed, so I am giving it some thought. These are the first words that come to mind: design, pattern, bold colour, light vs. shadow, simplified. I will keep thinking. Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Both sides of the Road

East Side of the Road & West Side of the Road, 4" x 6"

These are two paintings of the same road on Westham Island, near Delta, BC. One is a view of east side and the other is the west. They are little (4″ x 6″) and I finished both in one day. My goal was that each one would work on it’s own, or they could be displayed together –  as sort of a diptych. I love to paint old buildings, power poles and power lines, so I had a lot of fun with these paintings.
