Yellow Hills 18″ x 24″
I was in Alberta this summer and had some time to appreciate the landscape. From the top of the one of the gentle rolling hills, you can see forever – so different from the view here in Vancouver. In the background you can see the Rochfort Bridge Trestle, one of the longest wooden train trestles in North America.
Lily Leaves 11″ x 14″
Walking around the neighbourhood, I see so many beautiful flowers. When it comes to painting though, I wanted to focus on the leaves. It’s interesting how there seems to be a pattern within the tangle. They’re all trying to grow as high as they can before drooping down. All doing their best to maximize on their sun exposure. Not an easy thing this year, with our cold, late spring.

We found these fields of wildflowers during a summer hike at the Sun Peaks Ski Resort. We had to navigate through a herd of cattle who were enjoying them just as much as we were.

Wisteria & Shadows 18″x14″
It has been a while since I have posted any new work. That is because there hasn’t been any. I have been thinking and planning and dreaming about what I would like to paint, but I don’t seem to find time to do it. I really cannot complain though because my free time has been spent with my family, hanging out at the beach, park or pool. Anyone who lives in Vancouver knows that when the sun comes out you have to soak it up. It could unexpectedly transform into grey drizzle at any moment.
The down side is that I do lose my painting momentum. This painting took so long to complete, that I lost my enthusiasm half way through. I am happy to be moving on to something else and have decided to do some tiny paintings – that I can actually finish. I was in such a hurry to be done with the painting above, that I didn’t even sign it. Oops!

Lupines, Jericho Park 10" x 8"
I had a bit of trouble with this painting but after sitting with it for a week, I don’t mind it so much. I often struggle with paintings where both the foreground and background are full of complicated shapes. I had to keep reminding myself to simplify and not to paint every leaf and blade of grass.
These lupines grow in a wild field in Jericho Park. In June, it is a lovely sea of purple and you can hear a steady buzz of happy bees.

I would love to be running through a sunny field of flowers right now. During my run today, I experienced snow, hail, rain and wind. Is anyone else as ready for summer as I am? I guess I will just keep painting it until it arrives.

Here are a few more of these tiny paintings. They are so much fun, but not necessarily easy. I have to constantly remind myself not to get too fussy with the details. I think the most successful of these are the ones where the details are generalized.
